Education

Ph.D., School of Public Health, University of South Carolina, 1999
M.S., Marine Sciences, University of South Carolina, 1993
B.S., Biochemistry, Lebanon Valley College, 1990

Research Interests

  • Describing and understanding the distribution and effect of contaminants in coastal and marine environments
  • The fate and effects of fluorinated compounds (i.e. PFOS) as well as those compounds that may be used as PFAS replacements
  • The impacts of oil and petroleum-related products on coastal ecosystems
  • Monitoring chemical pollutants (legacy chemicals such as polychlorinated biphenyls and chlorinated pesticides as well as contemporary chemicals of concern) in coastal watersheds and managed ecosystems

Current and planned research projects

  • Toxicity of PFAS-Free aqueous film forming foams (AFFF) used in fire suppression
  • Benthic toxicity testing of a variety of individual PFAS substances
