Prospective Students
Thank you for your interest in the College of Charleston’s Graduate Program in Marine Biology (GPMB).
Some highlights of the GPMB are:
- Program based at the Grice Marine Laboratory (GML).
- Over 100 active faculty from the College of Charleston (CofC), the Marine Resources Research Institute of the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (MRRI), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the National Ocean Services (NOS), the National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science (NCCOS), the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), the Hollings Marine Laboratory (HML), Coastal Carolina University, and the Citadel.
- Students need not have an advisor, project, or funding identified prior to enrollment.
- A rigorous master's-only program, both with respect to coursework and thesis research expectations.
We support our students by offering them Teaching Assistantships, Research Assistantships, or Graduate Fellowships. Out-of-state students may apply for abatement of the out-of-state portion of the tuition.
Graduates from our program have been successful in using their degree to pursue a Ph.D. degree or directly enter the job market. This success is based in large part on our ability to train students in both basic and applied areas of science.
The Grice Marine Laboratory is located at Fort Johnson along with the labs of MRRI, NOAA, NOS, NIST, and MUSC. In total, about 400 personnel at Fort Johnson make up a vibrant and exciting community of marine scientists and students. We think that you will find our location near a major metropolitan area on one of the most unspoiled stretches of the eastern seaboard a particularly appealing place to study marine biology.
