Marine Research Student Colloquium 2023

ABCs of Communication Award

This is a science and communication award sponsored by the Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum. This is a voluntary event – it is not required, but strongly encouraged.

  • What: Students re-write their abstract to a 5th grade level. Abstract Length: 250 words
  • Award: $100 shopping spree for educational materials or research supplies
  • Due: Abstracts due by October 9th at 5 pm to Hannah Giddens.
  • Additional information: Zoom recording by Hanna Giddens.

Poster Presentations

Important Dates:

  • October 11: The .pdf of your poster must be submitted to Maggie Knight (knightma@g.cofc.edu).
  • October 19: Poster presentation

Details:

  • Posters must be 36 by 48 inches and oriented landscape.
  • Examples of past Colloquium posters can be found in the hallways at Grice Marine Laboratory.
  • Poster presenters should be prepared to give a 90 second elevator talk about their poster to all judges.
  • Your advisor must approve your poster before submission for printing.

Oral Presentations

Important Dates:

  • October 17: submit your final slides via email as a .ppt to Jody Beers (beersjm@cofc.edu).
  • October 20: Oral presentation

Details:

  • Talk length should be 12 minutes, with 3 minutes of questions afterwards. 
  • You will receive an 11-minute warning, meaning you have 1 minute remaining to finish your talk. Time limits will be strictly enforced.
  • Your advisor must approve your final slides for your presentation.

Feedback will be provided to all presenters (talks and posters) on both content and presentation.  Please remember that you are presenting to a general marine science audience, who may or may not be familiar with the questions, objectives, methods, etc. specific to your work.
