Current and planned research projects

  • Marine mammas as sentinal species for human health: Resident dolphins accumulate extremely high levels of these chemicals, on the same order of magnitude as that of occupationally exposed humans. The objective is to advance our understanding of the effects of CECs on human health in coastal communities. The central hypothesis is that dolphins represent a worst-case model for human health risk assessment due to their constant CEC-exposure. They represent prime sentinels that can be exploited to provide spatial and temporal trends in CEC exposures and afford early warnings of adverse impacts in humans.
  • Big Data science approaches to study Endocrine Disruption: Endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs), including personal care products (PCPs), can have significant effects on human health. The objective is to expand Big Data science approaches that integrate multidimensional, statistical and computational methods and provide expanded insights into how EDCs mediate their adverse effects.
  • Zebrafish as a model for studying EDC exposures: Zebrafish systems biology is advantageous in that it allows incorporation of dynamic effects such as differing concentrations of EDCs, homeostasis, temporal effects, developmental stage impacts, and whole embryo or tissue-specific analyses.
